'Soft & Squashy' Luggage for African Travel
For safari travel to Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Mozambique, Malawi, Tanzania, and Kenya it may be vitally important that you pack your safari clothing and safari accessories in 'soft and squashy' luggage. The reason for this is straight forward. The majority of safari lodges and camps within these countries are accessible only by light aircraft, for example Cessna 206's, 210's, and Caravan's. The small, cramped hold means that your luggage must not have hard sides and should rather be soft-sided, without a built-in frame or wheels so that the pilot is easily able to fit your luggage into the confined area of the luggage hold. Your luggage should also not exceed the strict limit of 12 to 15 kg's as this weighs the aircraft down affecting the trim and performance of the aircraft. The pilot is only allowed to fly if under the maximum takeoff weight (MTOW), and this is fixed for each type of aircraft. Simply put, if your luggage is not the correct weight, or soft sided, the pilot has every right to leave it behind, or ask you to charter a second aircraft to carry your luggage - often at great expense. Please always check with your tour operator, or contact us, if you are unsure about the weight restrictions and luggage allowance for your safari.
